"Thailand Songkran" Songkran Songkran Festival in Bangkok: Preparing for the trip and the experience of a soaking battle with Khao San Road

The Songkran Festival in Thailand (สงกรานต์) is a large-scale festival of laughter and cooling off. Everyone comes with a relaxed mood and makes friends with a water gun. Don’t worry about the other party being unhappy, just splash it hard. !This time I immediately share the situation of the battle on Khao San Road yesterday, as well as the transportation methods, strategies and precautions for participating in the Bangkok Water Festival. I hope you can come here to experience it next year.

Thailand Songkran Festival (Songkran Festival สงกรานต์) origin?

The Songkran Festival in Thailand is called the Songkran Festival (Thai: สงกรานต์, Songkran). It is celebrated in major cities in Thailand from April 4th to April 13th every year. The splashed water will take away the bad things in previous years. Luck, and greet the new year with joy.In this important festival, Thailand believes that water is a symbol of purity and the source of life. Therefore, during the New Year, apart from getting up early in the morning to take a bath, the Buddha statue is invited out of the temple, and the process of bathing in the Buddha’s praises began to last for several days. To celebrate the New Year, the Songkran Festival is also known as the "Buddhist Bathing Festival."

In addition, the traditional customs of Songkran are not unique to Thailand. Neighboring Southeast Asian countries, such as Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, also celebrate this delightful festival at the same time. The Songkran Festival is also divided into levels. The elders are treated first, usually by splashing a few drops of water on the leaves, which means something. The other kind of gentleness is the crazy type of splashing water. The people who are splashed can't yet. Hide! Will escape the blessing! Therefore, if you have participated in the Songkran Festival, if you have been splashed all over, don't be angry. This is a way of expression that brings blessings this year.

▲ When we set off, there was heavy rain in the sky. I thought it would affect Khaosan Road's participation in the Songkran Festival, but... it has no effect at all!

What equipment should I prepare to participate in the Songkran Festival?

Thailand’s climate is very hot in mid-April, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees every day. However, large shopping malls and MRT trains have super air-conditioning, so you should keep warm to avoid catching a cold.First of all, close to the week of the Songkran Festival, street vendors will sell water guns, waterproof bags, protective glasses of various colors and other equipment, which is quite convenient to purchase.

It should be noted that from the day when you go out, you must be prepared to "wet" your body. It is very likely that you will be wet before you reach Khao San Road. Therefore, it is necessary to wear light, quick-drying clothing. The following is an equipment list compiled by Anya~

  1. Hat: Water splashing starts at two o'clock in the afternoon. The weather is quite hot. You can prepare a hat for sun protection. The material is mainly breathable.
  2. Sunglasses/color protective glasses: Mainly everyone will get up to fight in water fights. Wearing them allows you to look straight ahead and fight. (Color protective glasses, the on-site price is 100THB.)
  3. Water gun: You can choose from cute backpack to large water gun. I think large water gun is the best choice because of its large capacity and sufficient combat power. (Large water guns, the on-site price ranges from 200~290THB.)
  4. Small waterproof bag: It is mainly used for holding mobile phones and small objects. The waterproof effect is no problem, and it can be hung on the chest. (Waterproof bag, the on-site price is 40THB.)
  5. 大型防水背包:从5KG到20KG都有,先生背的是5KG、朋友的防水后背包则是20KG,可以放随身物品避免被扒窃。(5KG防水包350THB、20G后背包1,200THB。)
  6. Clothing: It is better to be comfortable, light, and breathable. There will be foam, powder, etc. on site, so you can wear unnecessary clothes. (I personally think that you can wear better quick-drying underwear. I will not feel cold after playing with the hair dryer. I will provide it for your reference.)
  7. Shoes: slippers are fine.Ninety percent of the people at the scene wore flip-flops. The environment was wet. I would recommend the style of footwear to make it safer to walk.

How to get to Khao San Road? You can take the MRT first and then transfer to a taxi or tuk-tuk.

There are street vendors around Khao San Road. Tuk-tuk is easy to congest. It is recommended that everyone go out early. In our case, first take the BTS to Chit Lom station and get off at the exit near the Erawan Buddha. Take a taxi and rent it. The fare for the car is 200THB. The driver has been joking to ask for tips, but with a 20-minute drive, I think the fare is enough.

On the return journey, due to the large crowds at the exit, you will not be able to leave at about 5 o'clock after you finish a lap. Remember to walk to the main road and stop the car. It is less likely to encounter screaming prices. We took a tuk tuk from Khao San Road to Central World, the fare is also 200THB.

What other places in Bangkok have large-scale Songkran events?

Khao San Road is already a first-class battlefield for the Songkran Festival. In addition, I would also recommend going to the Central Wolrd and Siam stations. It is also about 2~3 o’clock to start the water fight, plus the department stores next to it, everyone needs to tidy up and go The restrooms are quite convenient, and there are live singing activities in the evening, which is very lively!

In addition, in the evening, you can go to Sala Daeng Station to have a water fight and experience a different atmosphere of celebration. The last reminder is to pay attention to your belongings, there are often crowds on the road, be careful of pickpockets!
