Overall Review: Actual Accommodation Reviews for Rakuten STAY TERRACE Hakone-Kowakudani

Rakuten STAY TERRACE Hakone Kowakudani is a Rakuten STAY brand under the Rakuten Group. Rooms range in size from 52 to 170 square meters, each equipped with a private natural hot spring bath, sauna, foot bath, and room-wide projector, emphasizing ultimate privacy and resort-style accommodation. The facilities are impressive, but housekeeping is not provided during your stay, which may lead to concerns about insufficient amenities or a lack of support. Overall, it's suitable for families or small groups seeking a private space and enjoying the private hot spring and sauna in their rooms.

  • Service features and brand characteristics: The entire check-in process is self-service and unmanned, with a strong sense of design but lacking the warmth of a real person. The hotel has implemented a self-service check-in system, where guests unlock their rooms with a pre-provided password. Check-in and check-out are both completed via tablet in the room. The process includes entering the reservation number, confirming the reservation details, signing consent forms, entering guest information, and confirming identity via video call. Even seniors unfamiliar with technology can complete the process smoothly. However, due to the unmanned nature of the accommodation, if items are forgotten after check-out, a phone call is required to access the lobby. Since there is no counter, luggage storage is not available before check-in or after check-out.
  • Room type selection and facilities: From family rooms to large gatherings, the rooms are surprisingly large, and the private sauna is the biggest highlight. There are six types of guest rooms, with suites accommodating up to 10 people. All rooms share amenities including a terrace, welcome drinks and light snacks, a projector, pajamas, a natural hot spring bath with a water jet, and a dry sauna. Some suites also feature an open-air bath, a water shower, and a 5.1-channel surround sound system. The sauna and hot spring foot bath are highly praised; the cypress wood bathtub and semi-open-air bath are comparable in size to a small hotel's large public bath. The kitchen is equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, including a Dyson hairdryer, although thorough cleaning may be a concern.
  • Dining space and public facilities: Ingredients are delivered directly from Lotte Market and chefs can be booked, but you have to cook the food yourself.Dinner options include sea urchin shabu-shabu with goldeneye snapper from Izu, beef sukiyaki, and a steak BBQ set meal. Breakfast offers both Japanese and Western options, with each set meal including a welcome beverage. Meals are prepared in the room refrigerator before check-in and are not included. The second floor features Lotte STAY's first exclusive spa, offering aromatherapy massages and facials; reservations are required for spa use. Beer, wine, sake, soft drinks, snacks, and a welcome dessert are provided complimentaryly in the refrigerator.
  • Transportation and surrounding environment: It is a 5-minute walk from Kowakudani Station, but convenience stores and restaurants require a car to reach.Located a 5-minute walk from Kowakudani Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway, the building offers free parking with one space per passenger room, plus 6 EV charging spots. It's a 4-minute drive to Kowakuen Garden, a 6-minute drive to the Hakone Sculpture Forest Museum, and a 3-minute drive to the nearest convenience store. There are no restaurants or convenience stores within walking distance of the facility. Due to its proximity to Mt. Myojo, it offers unique local experiences, allowing visitors to enjoy the daimonji-yaki torch and fireworks in summer and witness Hakone Ekiden runners from their windows in winter.

⭐Recommendation rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5.0)

  • Recommended groups:Families, small groups, or travelers with pets who wish to fully enjoy the sauna and hot springs in a private space
  • Reasons for recommendation:The room features a private natural hot spring, sauna, and foot bath, offering spacious accommodations comparable to a resort villa. For this level of accommodation, the cost is relatively affordable.

✅Reminders

  • Cleaning service is not provided during consecutive stays.According to facility regulations, cleaning staff will not be allowed to enter the room during consecutive stays. Several reviews have also indicated that the cleanliness upon check-in did not meet expectations. It is recommended to check immediately after check-in whether the cooking utensils, kitchen equipment, etc. have been properly cleaned. If you have any concerns, please contact customer service as soon as possible.
  • Food and beverage reservations must be made in advance, and some items will require self-heating:Meal plans can only be booked through the Rakuten STAY official app or Rakuten Travel. "This stay was absolutely terrible. I travel to Japan frequently, but this was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The circuit breaker tripped four times during our five-night stay. This was clearly a problem with the hotel's electrical system and room management, not due to guest misuse. Worse still, the hotel lacked urgency and initiative. No one came to check on us unless we called. I had to repeatedly contact customer service to get any response. • First night (around 12:30 AM): The circuit breaker tripped while we only had the air conditioning/TV on. After a brief restoration of power, it tripped again and then never came back up. The hotel said they were full and refused to change rooms. Our whole family had to sleep until dawn without heating/air conditioning. For a family stay, this is more than just uncomfortable—it's a basic safety and service failure. • Third night: We were told a maintenance person would come, but the circuit breaker tripped again during normal use (while preparing dinner). The staff simply apologized without offering any practical solutions or follow-up. • 4" Day 1 (the day before check-out): Another power outage. While the staff were "discussing" the situation, we were left waiting until I insisted repeatedly before they finally arranged for us to change rooms. After experiencing these repeated malfunctions, I emailed requesting compensation but have not received a reply. If you want a stable, comfortable, and well-serviced stay in Hakone—especially for families—please choose another hotel.

"The house is comfortable and comfortable. It is good and comfortable. It is a bathroom with a heart and a heart. It is a hot spring in Hakone. . . . There are indoor and outdoor cypress baths, sauna and water baths, and foot baths. Inner wind bath ➖槧の香りが好いだけでお水はぬるくCan't be adjusted? Open-air bath➖とにかくぬるい. Cold. Hanくてほとんど入れなかった. サウナ➖スイッチを into the れて1 time and the right temperature になると description が书いてあるが, the highest 90 degree setting にしてもぬるい. Happy greenhouse レベル.これはサウナじゃない. Foot bath➖ずっと60℃のお热が出ているようで、こちらは热くて入れない. The water is poured into the foot bath and the water is poured into the foot bath. It is a hot spring bath that saves the amount of hot springs and is suitable for foreigners. Hot springs are good and Japanese are good. Looking forward to the big date and the promise of the future. "Attention⚠️ After booking, we were not given the check-in code or the main entrance code, and there was no email address for customer service. We only discovered this when we arrived at the hotel that night. There was also no phone number at the entrance to directly contact hotel staff; there was only a tablet inside the hotel where we could make calls. We were trapped outside for almost an hour, and luckily, some guests inside were able to get in. I read reviews, and many people have encountered similar situations. You should think twice before booking this room. The price is considered mid-to-high range, but the frequent omission of important information leads to a poor experience for guests. There was also a faint smell of smoke and barbecue in the room that hadn't been properly addressed. If you are sensitive to smells, you should reconsider."
