Comprehensive review: Actual accommodation evaluation of natural hot spring Higo-no-yu Onyado Nono Kumamoto

Onjuku Nono Kumamoto is a Japanese-style onsen ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) brand under the Tomiyo Group. It features tatami flooring throughout the hotel, a rooftop natural hot spring bath, and the brand's signature complimentary late-night ramen and popsicles after the bath. The main drawback is that the hotel gets very crowded during peak season, and there may be queues for public facilities. Overall, it's suitable for those who prefer a Japanese atmosphere, value onsen facilities, and enjoy complimentary food and drinks. It's also recommended for families traveling together or those who want to experience the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese ryokan but need the convenience of a business hotel.

  • Service features and brand characteristics: Japanese style combined with a variety of free services; peak season crowds may affect the experience! Onjuku Nono combines the convenience of a business hotel with the experience of a traditional hot spring inn. Guests are required to remove their shoes and change into indoor slippers upon entry. The entire hotel features tatami flooring, creating a rich Japanese atmosphere. The hotel offers several complimentary services, including a welcome drink upon check-in, with options for coffee, tea, and seasonal hot and cold beverages. Complimentary late-night ramen is served in the evening, primarily with soy sauce, featuring a rich broth and springy noodles. Complimentary popsicles are available after a daytime hot spring bath, and Yakult is provided in the morning; however, crowds during peak season can negatively impact the experience.
  • Room type selection and facilities: Comfortable Japanese-style rooms are equipped with American Serta mattresses, making them comfortable enough for multiple guests! All guest rooms feature tatami flooring and Serta mattresses from the USA, creating a spacious and comfortable sleeping experience. Family rooms have two single beds and two sets of Japanese-style mattresses, accommodating up to four people. The spacious rooms are ideal for families or groups, providing ample room for children to play. Bathrooms include a separate shower, bidet toilet, complimentary toiletries, and a hairdryer. The rooms are tastefully designed and highly clean; however, the tatami floors can be cold and hard in winter, so it is recommended to bring your own slippers.
  • Dining and public facilities: The rooftop hot spring bath and a generous buffet breakfast are available, but there may be queues during peak hours! The hotel's rooftop public bath features natural hot spring water from Narasaka Onsen and includes indoor and outdoor baths, a hot dry sauna, and a cold water pool, allowing guests to enjoy the sky views while soaking. Adjacent to the public bath are a manga reading area, massage chairs, a self-service laundry room, and coin-operated vending machines. Breakfast is a Japanese and Western-style buffet with approximately 50 dishes to choose from, including Japanese appetizers, freshly made egg dishes, Kumamoto-style red beef burgers, and stewed horse tendon, among other delicacies. During peak tourist season, it is recommended to avoid peak times when enjoying breakfast or massage chairs.
  • Transportation and Surroundings: Located in the heart of Kumamoto City, within walking distance of major attractions and shopping districts! The hotel is located in Shimodori Shopping Street, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, near the entrance to Kumamoto Shinshichi Street and Shimodori Shopping Street. "The hotel is conveniently located right next to a shopping street. Being a new hotel, it's very clean with a subtle cypress scent. The female staff at the entrance were lovely and friendly, even offering to help us take out the trash. However, a group of Korean tour guides and older women arrived later. They were completely disobedient, refusing to use the carpet to wipe their suitcases, making the female staff wipe each suitcase individually. The tour guide even inexplicably started swearing at the counter. If any staff members see this message, please don't mind those rude people; you've done a very good job."

"This hotel, which just opened in 2025, has a fantastic location. It's within walking distance of shopping districts, and next to Starbucks, McDonald's, drugstores, and izakayas. It boasts consistently high-quality service. The Dormy Inn group offers complimentary coffee in the lobby, free late-night snacks, ramen, and ice cream in the onsen. The large public bath is new and even has a small outdoor pool. It offers a full Japanese onsen ryokan experience in the city. I recommend it to anyone who wants to shop and enjoy a Japanese onsen."
