Why is Nagoya recommended as a choice for novice travel?

Good location, you can try to arrange a two-city tour

Nagoya is located in the central region of Japan. As the core city of the Chukyo circle, it is located between Tokyo and Osaka. This location advantage makes Nagoya one of Japan's transportation hubs. Whether you depart from Tokyo, Yokohama or Osaka, you can easily reach it by taking the Shinkansen.

  • Convenient transportation: As one of the four major cities in Japan, Nagoya has very developed transportation. Whether you are departing from Tokyo (about 1 hour and 40 minutes by Shinkansen) or from Osaka (about 50 minutes by Shinkansen), it is easy to get there.
  • Big city and relaxed pace: Nagoya is second only to Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama in Japan in terms of scale, but there are not as many tourists as in Tokyo or Osaka, so it is suitable for first-time independent travelers.
  • Airport connections: Nagoya's Chubu Centrair International Airport is about a 30-minute drive from the city center, and there are direct buses, subways and other transportation options to easily reach downtown Nagoya.
  • Meitetsu Express Bus:Meitetsu Bus departs from downtown Nagoya and provides direct routes to many popular tourist cities such as Kanazawa, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Toyama. For example, the express bus to Kanazawa takes about 3.5 hours, which not only saves you the tedious transfer process, but is also much cheaper than the Shinkansen or railway.

Nagoya City is divided into 16 administrative districts, but for tourists, the most convenient areas with the most accommodation options are concentrated in the city center. Most of the accommodation near the station are Japanese-style chain business hotels, which are reasonably priced and well-equipped, making them an ideal choice that combines convenience and cost-effectiveness.

Kinjo Pier Station│Legoland

LEGOLAND Japan Resort is the only large-scale outdoor theme park in Japan with LEGO bricks as its theme. It is located in Nagoya Port District and officially opened in 2017. This park is based on the concept of "learning through playing and playing through learning", combining creativity and entertainment. It is suitable for children aged 2 to 12 and their parents to participate.

The park is divided into seven major theme areas. It not only has exciting amusement facilities and a mini building block city, but also allows children to build Lego models by themselves. It is an interactive park that encourages children to actively participate. We found that from riding the roller coaster to participating in the Lego workshop, every corner was full of surprises and creative inspiration. In fact, there were quite a few young people who came to play!

In addition, the "LEGO Hotel" and "Ocean Exploration Aquarium" next to the park are also extended itineraries that many families choose to visit together. If you are planning to take your children on a self-guided tour to Nagoya, Legoland will not only leave you with unforgettable memories, but it is also a perfect attraction for both education and entertainment!

Kinjo Pier Station│Ocean Exploration Aquarium

SEA LIFE Nagoya is located in the same park as Legoland. When we arrived at the site, we found that they were selling "Park + Aquarium Combo Tickets", so we decided to buy them together and spend a whole day here to have fun! In the morning, we had an adventure in Legoland. Little Hamburger was excited to try out various facilities and had a lot of fun. In the afternoon, change the pace and stroll into the colorful and lively world of the aquarium.

The aquarium uses colorful display designs to present marine life from all over the world, including tropical fish, stingrays, sharks and seahorses. It also has an underwater tunnel and interactive experience area where children can observe the living conditions of animals up close. SEA LIFE also conveys the concept of "ocean protection" through interesting experiential activities, combining education with entertainment. For us, this arrangement made the journey more rhythmic, and Little Hamburger also gained a lot from the mixture of movement and stillness. It is a highly recommended one-day parent-child tour!

Love Earth Expo Memorial Park Station│Ghibli Park

Ghibli Park is located in Aichi Prefecture's "Ai・Earth Expo Memorial Park". It will open in phases from 2022. It is a fantasy park that makes people feel like they are walking into the world of Hayao Miyazaki's classic animation. The park recreates scenes such as the bathhouse street from "Spirited Away", the Kusabaki house from "My Neighbor Totoro", and the Laputa Garden from "Castle in the Sky". The lifelike architecture and detailed designs make people feel as if they are in the animation themselves.

Unlike traditional amusement parks, Ghibli Park does not have exciting rides. Instead, it creates an immersive "walking" experience through the integration of natural environment and architecture. It is especially suitable for travelers who like to slowly savor the world view of Ghibli. We have previously shared our visit experience on our fan page and received a lot of resonance and response. However, if you are not familiar with Ghibli's works, it is not recommended to make a special trip there, as you may find it not interesting enough.

The newly opened "Witch Valley" and "Ghost Street" add highlights to the park. In "Witch's Valley", you can see classic scenes from "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Kiki's Delivery Service", including Howl's castle and Kiki's bakery; "Ghost Street" perfectly recreates the streets and bathhouse buildings full of Japanese nostalgia in "Spirited Away".

It is recommended that you book tickets for the Novice Village online in advance and set aside a whole day to explore slowly, enjoying a dreamlike Ghibli journey in healing and fantasy!

Morishita Station │ Tokugawa Art Museum, Tokugawa Garden

If you want to learn more about Japanese history and daimyo culture, the Tokugawa Art Museum is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. This art museum was founded in 1935 by the Owari Tokugawa family, one of the three great families of the Edo period. The museum houses precious cultural relics passed down from generation to generation since Tokugawa Ieyasu, including samurai swords, tea utensils, wedding items and Noh masks. It is known as the most complete treasure house of daimyo culture.

The exhibits include not only personal belongings of Tokugawa Ieyasu, but also famous items related to historical giants such as Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is like a three-dimensional history of modern Japan. In order to protect the family’s history and cultural assets, descendants established a foundation and an art museum, allowing these treasures to be preserved intact to this day. The exhibition design in the museum pays great attention to historical context. Even novice tourists who are unfamiliar with Japanese history can easily understand the meaning of each exhibit and the story behind it.

Tokugawa-en, located next to the Tokugawa Art Museum, is a traditional Japanese garden built in the style of a daimyo garden. It was originally the site of the Owari Tokugawa family's villa. The entire garden is centered around a large pond, combining waterfalls, streams, strange rocks and seasonal plants to create a typical "pond and spring circuit" landscape.

Whether it is the blooming cherry blossoms in spring, the lush greenery in summer, the picturesque red maple leaves in autumn, or the tranquil and elegant snow scenery in winter, every corner in the park is worth savoring, and you can find a quiet place in the hustle and bustle of the city. Osu Kannon Station│Osu Kannon

Nagoya Osu Kannon, also known as "Shinfuku-ji Hosho-in", is the most spiritual and historical temple in downtown Nagoya. The temple was founded in the 14th century and was originally located in present-day Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture. It was founded by Noshin Shonin and later moved to its current location by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 17. The Guanyin enshrined in the temple has been extremely effective since ancient times and is deeply revered by believers.

This is not only a good place to worship and pray, but also a place to admire historical buildings and antique wooden structures. In particular, flea markets are held on the 18th and 28th of each month, attracting many locals and tourists to hunt for treasures. The surrounding Osu Shopping Street is also our favorite, with everything from nostalgic Japanese-style shops to fashionable clothing and electronic product stores.

Osu Kannon Station│Fuji Sengen Shrine

Nagoya Fuji Sengen Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Nagoya City. It was founded in 1495 (Meiyo 4) and originated from the belief system of Mount Fuji Hongu Sengen Taisha. The main deity is Konohanasakiyahime-no-Mikoto, an important deity symbolizing the worship of Mount Fuji. Konohanasakiyahime-no-Mikoto is a goddess in Japanese mythology. Her name means "the princess of blooming flowers", symbolizing the beauty, vitality and prosperity of cherry blossoms. Therefore, she is worshipped as the main deity in many Sengen shrines throughout Japan.

The "Fuji Mountain Festival" held in June every year is the most representative event of this shrine. At that time, worshippers will climb the "Fujizuka" which symbolizes Mount Fuji and participate in the purification ceremony. The overall atmosphere is solemn and sacred. The shrine is hidden in the quiet alleys between Osu Kannon and Manshō-ji Temple. It is a quiet place we accidentally discovered while exploring this area, and it has become an unforgettable meditation experience during our trip.

Osu Kannon Station│Manshōji Temple

Manshō-ji Temple was founded in 1540 by Oda Nobunaga's father, Oda Nobuhide. At that time, it was a large temple covering an area of more than XNUMX tsubo. It was an important religious stronghold in the Owari region. The main deity enshrined in the temple is the Eleven-Faced Avalokitesvara, a symbol of compassion and wisdom.

Tokugawa Ieyasu actually lived in Manshō-ji for three years when he was a child. When he was only six years old, he was originally going to be sent to Suruga as a hostage, but he was sold to Oda Nobuhide halfway and was eventually settled in Manshō-ji. This unknown history also establishes a deep connection between Wanshou Temple and the Tokugawa family.

For history buffs, this place is like the entrance to the Warring States Period; for ordinary tourists, it is a good place to find peace and quiet in the bustling city and experience the traditional cultural atmosphere. Don’t forget, the nearby food and second-hand vintage shops are also worth exploring!

Toyokawa Inari Station│Toyokawa Inari Shrine

Toyokawa Inari (Myogan-ji Temple) is located in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. It is one of the three major Inari shrines in Japan and one of the most efficacious places in the country. Despite its name, it is actually a Buddhist temple dedicated to Dakiniten, the deity who governs wealth and business prosperity. Unlike ordinary Inari shrines (such as Fushimi Inari Taisha), Toyokawa Inari incorporates strong Buddhist elements and is a sacred place of Inari worship based on Buddhist beliefs.

Tashiniten originated from Indian Buddhism. After being introduced to Japan, she was influenced by Esoteric Buddhism (such as Shingon Buddhism) and was reinterpreted as a god who "brings wealth, blesses prosperous business, and protects all living beings." Tathagata is a beautiful celestial being who rides a white fox and sometimes holds rice ears or pearls in her hands, symbolizing harvest and wealth.

In addition to the main hall, the most attractive part of Toyokawa Inari is the "Oku-no-in", which is surrounded by thousands of stone statues of little foxes. Each fox has a different posture, creating a mysterious and healing atmosphere that makes people linger.

Atsuta Jingu West Station│Atsuta Jingu

Atsuta Shrine is the place where the Kusanagi Sword, one of the three great sacred treasures of Japan, is placed, and it is also the place where the spirit of Amaterasu Omikami resides. With a history of over 1900 years, Atsuta Shrine is considered to be a super important shrine after Ise Grand Shrine. The grounds are filled with towering ancient trees and a solemn atmosphere. The most famous tree is the "Big Camphor" which is said to be planted by Kobo Daishi himself and is over 1000 years old. Many travelers come here specifically to feel the energy of the sacred tree.

A reminder to the novice village: remember to buy a "Demon-Breaking Arrow" as a souvenir, which symbolizes the exorcism of evil spirits. It is loved by travelers who pray for peace and success! The demon-breaking arrows sold at Atsuta Jingu are intricately designed, and some are even decorated with elements representing Nagoya, such as the golden dragon and the Kusanagi sword. They have both sacred meaning and local characteristics. Many people will buy the amulets during New Year's Day and place them at home or on their desks for safety. Shonai-dori Station│Inu Shrine

It is said that some villagers were troubled by flooding in the Shonai River and prayed to a mountain monk for protection. Miraculously, there was no flood that year. However, when the villagers accidentally opened the coin inside the shrine, they found a picture of a dog and the words "犬の王" inside. The following year, floods struck again, and the villagers prayed to Yamabushi again and followed his instructions to bury the coins and build a shrine. From then on, floods never occurred again, which became the basis for the birth of the Inu Shrine.

Inu Shrine is not only a historical symbol of Nagoya, but also has unique religious characteristics. The main deity of the shrine, Inuhime, is closely associated with safe childbirth and childbearing, so many pregnant women who come to worship will come to the shrine to pray for blessings for a smooth and safe delivery. Kami-Iida Station│ Imperial Water Park

The Imperial Waterway Garden in Kita-ku is an underrated treasure. It was originally an artificial waterway dug by the Owari Domain for irrigation and domestic water during the Edo period, but was later filled in due to urban development. It was not until 49 that it was renovated into a 1974-kilometer green promenade.

It stretches from the Meetupo Bridge to the Saruto Bridge, winding along the bank of the Kurokawa River. In spring, the cherry blossom trees here bloom in rows, and the petals fall on the paths and the river. The scenery is super dreamy and is comparable to other popular cherry blossom viewing spots in Nagoya. Shimizu Station│Culture of the Flowers and Plants

This building, full of the charm of the times, was originally built as a private residence by the family that founded Okaya Steel Machinery in 9. Later, with the cooperation of the Nagoya City Government and the Okaya family, it was repaired and preserved, and was transformed into a cultural and leisure space and officially opened in 1920. The park retains the original architectural styles of the academy, teahouse and earthenware storehouse, and has added a multi-functional art hall with a view of the garden, making it an excellent relay station when walking on the "Cultural Path".

The garden design was inspired by the "Hundred Flowers and Herbs" folding screen, an important cultural asset in the Tokugawa Art Museum. Nearly 90 kinds of flowers are planted, which bloom in turn with the change of seasons. Spring cherry blossoms, summer lotus, autumn silvergrass, and winter plum blossoms all have their own charm, like a living botanical painting. Free tea is provided in the museum. Visitors can sit by the window for a while, looking at the changing flower scenery in front of them, enjoying a quiet and leisurely time, making people feel as if they are temporarily withdrawn from their daily life.

Nagoya Castle Station│Nagoya Castle

When talking about must-visit attractions in Nagoya, how can we not mention "Nagoya Castle"! This castle was built in 1610 by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu after his victory in the Battle of Sekigahara in order to guard against the power of the Toyotomi family. At that time, 20 western daimyo including Kato Kiyomasa and Fukushima Masanori were mobilized to build the castle, which was known in history as "Tenkabushin".

During the Warring States Period to the early Edo Period in Japan, the shogunate ordered daimyo from all over the country to contribute manpower and money to participate in the construction of large-scale public works, such as building cities (such as Nagoya Castle and Osaka Castle), repairing rivers, and building roads or embankments. All participating daimyo had to obey unconditionally. Not only did they have to mobilize manpower and materials, but they also had to pay out of their own pockets. This was a political means used by the shogunate to "consume the daimyo's financial resources and weaken local power."

The huge tower of Nagoya Castle, adorned with golden shabu (shabu), is a shining symbol of authority. The magnificent Honmaru Palace, the magnificent stone walls and deep moats are the highest masterpieces of modern castle architecture. Even after World War II, Nagoya Castle is still the core of Nagoya's city history. Come here to experience the glory and grandeur of the Tokugawa family!

Osu Kannon Station │ Osu Shopping Street

Osu Shopping Street has been developing since the Edo period and has a history of more than 400 years. It is the most popular time-honored shopping street in Nagoya. Walking into Osu, you will see retro street scenes on one side and modern shops on the other. There are more than 1,200 shops densely arranged, selling everything from traditional Japanese sweets, snacks, fashionable clothing, second-hand vintage clothes to the latest electrical appliances.

If you want to arrange a relaxing one-day trip to Osu Shopping Street, you can start from the historic "Manshō-ji Temple".

Manshō-ji Temple is the ancestral temple of Oda Nobunaga's family. It houses the famous White Dragon God and a luxurious digital water curtain show, making it a great place for taking photos and praying. Then stroll along the bustling shopping street and enjoy the fun of eating while walking. Whether it is the human-smelling miso skewers, takoyaki, or various desserts and ice creams, you can't stop eating.

Nagoya is a historic and vibrant city in central Japan, but it has more than just historical sites and attractions. It also has local delicacies that will make you fall in love with them at first sight. If this is the first time you’ve heard of “Nagoya Meshi”, follow this article to find out what classic delicacies you can’t miss!

  • Eat three eels (ひつまぶし): Cut the grilled eel into small pieces and spread it on the white rice. You can eat it as is, add seasonings, and finally pour in the broth to make tea rice. You can satisfy three flavors at once!
  • Kishimen: The wide flat noodles are particularly easy to absorb soup, smooth and chewy, and are a classic staple food for locals.
  • "Luxury Breakfast" Culture: The popular "Monning Service" provides a whole set of great value breakfast for every cup of coffee you order.
  • Miso pork chop (Miso カツ): The thick pork chop is fried until golden and crispy, topped with salty-sweet miso sauce, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and goes great with rice!
  • Chicken wings (Teba first): The skin is crispy, the meat is tender, with a hint of pepper and a slightly spicy taste. It is a good dish to go with wine and a good snack.
  • Ogura Toast (Ogura Toast): Fragrant toast spread with sweet red bean paste may seem simple, but it is the favorite snack for afternoon tea among locals.

Fushimi Station│EGERESUYA English Coffee Shop

If you are visiting Nagoya for the first time, you must not miss the unique "buy coffee and get breakfast free" culture here. Just order a cup of coffee or black tea and a simple but thoughtful breakfast will be provided. This time we visited the "English Westinghouse Coffee Shop" near Fushimi Station. It was very conveniently located near the hotel where we were staying.

Because it was during weekday working hours, there were only a few customers in the store, and we soon had the place to ourselves. The overall atmosphere was quiet and leisurely, with light music playing, which was very comfortable. The store’s main dish is charcoal-roasted hand-brewed coffee, which is fragrant but not bitter, and has a mild and smooth taste. The cream bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a hint of sweetness. It may be because it is specially baked with sugar, which blends perfectly with the rich milk flavor.

Fushimi Station│Chachiban

I really like the simple yet satisfying breakfast combination in Nagoya, so I searched around the hotel to see if there were any similar coffee shops. As a result, I accidentally discovered "Chicha Qiban" which has a Google rating of 4.3 stars. The simple Japanese decoration style was appealing at first sight, so I immediately decided to go and check it out.

This shop is a little different from ordinary breakfast cafes. It not only provides basic butter toast, but also has a variety of flavors to choose from, such as egg salad and Ogura red beans. There are more choices and the taste is more varied. Not only breakfast, but also exquisite lunch meals are served here, which is suitable for visiting during brunch or light meals.

What’s special is that exhibitions or activities are held from time to time on the upper floor of the coffee shop, making the overall atmosphere more lively and artistic. For travelers who like to discover local specialty shops, "Chicha Nanaban" is definitely worth including in the Nagoya breakfast list.

Fushimi Station│ Courtyard by Marriott Nagoya THE LOUNGE

When we arrived in Nagoya, it was raining heavily, which was not suitable for going out. In addition, everyone was too excited the night before and didn’t sleep much, so the next day we just relaxed and slept until we woke up naturally, and went straight downstairs to the hotel lobby for brunch. "THE LOUNGE" on the first floor of the Courtyard Hotel is brightly lit and comfortable. The pasta and hamburgers they offer are priced between 1,700 and 2,300 yen, which is actually not expensive if you do the math. The food is refreshing and not greasy, very friendly to Taiwanese tourists and very appetizing. It is recommended for travelers who come to Nagoya and want to have a relaxing meal!
