The History of Araha Beach Park: The Story of the British Ship "Indian Oak" Running aground

Beyond the fantastical pirate ship rides, Arahaha Park in Chatan Town, Okinawa, also hides a little-known historical story. The park's replica sailboat ride commemorates the British sailing ship, the Indian Oak, which ran aground in the area.

The story begins on August 1840, 8, when a typhoon stranded a sailing ship belonging to the East India Company on a coral reef off Chatan. While wreckage recovery was common practice in Asia and Europe at the time, the villagers of Chatan demonstrated a unique generosity. They not only rescued all 14 crew members, but also generously provided food and lodging for the next 67 days until they safely departed Okinawa. They even reportedly provided a 45-ton boat to help the crew continue their voyage.

This touching history was later recorded in the British Naval Annals and Records, which is still preserved in the British Library. The large pirate ship ride we see in Araha Park today was designed based on the appearance of the Indian Oak.

Araha Park is also known for its striking pirate ship playset, making it one of Okinawa's most popular family attractions. Resembling an ancient sailing ship, this massive playset incorporates slides, climbing frames, and a tunnel, transporting children to a storybook adventure. Not only is the playground a delight for children, but the surrounding lawn is also perfect for picnics, playing ball, or letting the kids run free, making it the ideal spot for a relaxing afternoon with family.
