Did you know that there is a shrine by the sea in downtown Okinawa? Naminoue Shrine is not only conveniently located, but also has a beach next to it where you can play in the water! This article summarizes the location of Naminoue Shrine, the most convenient way to get there, and helps you arrange a one-day tour schedule: from hotel check-in, playing in the pool, strolling all the way to dusk worship and beach walks. Family travelers and self-guided travelers can easily follow this guide and have a great afternoon!

How to get to Naminoue Shrine? A complete guide to its location and transportation

Naminoue Shrine is one of the most representative shrines in Naha City, Okinawa. It is also one of the few sea view shrines that "faces the sea and faces the city". Many people come here to worship, buy amulets, or take photos of the Okinawan-style torii and the beach. The shrine is located in the northwest of Naha City, and the back is close to the "Naminoue Beach" which is very popular for swimming in the summer.

Because it is not far from the city center, it is easy to get there even without renting a car. For novice independent travelers, it is a traffic-friendly attraction that is very suitable for a half-day tour.

How to get to Naminoue Shrine without renting a car? This is the easiest way

The combination of monorail and bus is the most convenient way for non-driving travelers:

  • Monorail: Take it to "Kencho-mae Station"
  • Transfer to bus: Take bus number 2, 5, 15 or 45
  • Get off at: Get off at Seibumon Station and walk about 3 minutes to Naminoue Shrine

Driving to Naminoue Shrine? Time and parking location suggestions

If you choose to drive, you can reach Naminoue Shrine in about 15 minutes from Naha Airport. It is recommended to park your car in the two nearby paid parking lots:

  • Next to the Naha West Branch of the Bank of Okinawa
  • Paid parking spaces around Naminoue Beach

It takes about 3 to 5 minutes to walk from these two places to the shrine, and it is not easy to get lost in the navigation settings.

A little reminder: Don’t walk through International Pass!

Although the distance does not seem far on the map, it takes more than 30 minutes to walk from Kokusai-dori to Naminoue-gu Shrine. It is easy to get heatstroke in summer, especially if you are traveling with children or elders. It is best to take a car to save energy!

How to plan a day trip to Naminoue Shrine? This is the best way to travel with your family

This is a one-day tour plan suitable for beginners. According to our actual experience, it starts from checking in at the hotel in the afternoon, visiting Naminoue Shrine in the evening, and going to Naminoue Beach to play in the waves. The next day, we can go to Naha Kokusai-dori Shopping Street for dining and shopping to complete a wonderful day.

15:00 Check in at the hotel: put down your luggage and prepare to relax

We chose to stay at a new hotel near Naminouegu, Hotel SANSUI Naha Ryukyu Hot Spring Naminoueyu. It opened grandly in February 2022. It is a brand new 2-story hotel building with an independent multi-story parking lot next to it, which is also very convenient for travelers who drive!

Book the Shanshui Suite on the executive floor, which is a bit like two floors but changed to a "floor within a building" format. The lower floor is the bedroom and bathroom space, and the upper floor is the jacuzzi and outdoor space, from which you can overlook the blue sky and blue sea of Okinawa. After recording the room facilities and placing the luggage, hurry up to go out and prepare to walk to Naminoue Shrine to worship, ask for a small backpack amulet, and play in the water at Naminoue Beach. Let's Go.

15:30~16:00 Visit Naminoue Shrine: The most romantic time is at sunset

Since Okinawa's Naminoue Shrine has become one of the must-visit attractions for Taiwanese tourists, based on our experience of three visits, the crowds are heaviest from morning to 2pm, and many young people will come here to take photos after changing into their "Ryukyu costume experience". I would recommend that novice tourists wait until the weather turns cooler in the afternoon before visiting Naminoue Shrine. They can take photos of the shrine and the sunset sea view, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.

This time I did my homework and saw a kind of amulet for elementary school students. It is a unique amulet of Naminoue Shrine. It comes in black and red, and is a small and exquisite school bag shape. The first time I bought it for Xiao Hamburger as a souvenir, and let him choose his favorite color. Unexpectedly, after sharing it in the fan group, my little sister also wanted one. OK! Then I went to the group buying club to ask if there were any members who wanted it, and simply bought it together. So... it took several trips to buy all the amulets. (For the restrictions on buying amulets, please see below)

16:00~17:00 Naminoue Beach: Kids let off steam, adults let go

Naminoue Beach is located next to Naminoue Shrine, just a few minutes' walk away. It is a great spot to enjoy the waves after visiting the shrine. Most open beaches in Okinawa are equipped with safety facilities, such as clearly marked water play areas and on-site lifeguards to assist in patrolling. However, it should be noted that lifeguards usually leave around 5 pm, so it is recommended to arrange the water play itinerary to end before this time. After visiting Naminoue Shrine, we stopped by the beach to play in the water and enjoy the sea view. The water is clear and the beach is white. The children had a lot of fun, and the adults could also relax for a short time and experience the most relaxing moment in Okinawa summer.

▲ Although I didn’t go to Okinawa’s large beaches specifically to play in the water, Naminoue Beach is worth putting on my itinerary.

17:00~18:30 Stroll around Naminoue Shrine and have dinner

After finishing the water play at Naminoue Beach, it was getting dark, which was a good time for a walk and dinner. The area around Naminoue Shrine is not as lively as Kokusai-dori, but there are several restaurants with good Google reviews, simple atmosphere and affordable prices. Occasionally, you can see food trucks selling Okinawan snacks or ice cream outside the beach, which is suitable for buying some snacks while walking and strolling, and please be sure to take away the garbage.

Wendy's chose a burger shop "Eightman's Sea Burg" which is only a one-minute walk away. In addition to selling food on the first floor, it is also a hotel and accommodation. I like the decoration style! The shop's signature burger is a fish burger, as the name of the shop is easy to understand, and the toast and food are all excellent. It is suitable as a rest stop during the trip to Naminoue Palace. The seating area on the 4th floor is open in the afternoon. You can tell the staff to deliver the food to the 4th floor and enjoy the sea view while eating.

18:30~21:00 Sky Bar August Moon: Drink + relax at the end of the day

Wendy and Hamburger were sweating a lot on the beach, so they quickly washed off the sand and stickiness and got back to a comfortable state after returning to the hotel. It just so happened that there was a nice bar with a nice view on the top floor of the hotel where we stayed - Sky Bar August Moon. Children can also come with us, so we decided to have a drink here to relax and let Hamburger eat something to replenish his energy.

The characteristic of this bar is that it overlooks the night view of Naha city, and you can also see the changes in the sky from sunset to night. The atmosphere is good and not noisy, which is suitable for slowly relaxing before ending a day trip. The cocktail section of Sky Bar August Moon is also worth seeing. Not only are there common classic drinks, but there are also many special cocktails using homemade liqueurs. For example, the May limited cocktail uses local passion fruit in Okinawa, rum and mint. It is sour, sweet and refreshing. A sip really makes you feel that the daytime heat is diluted.

08:30~10:00 Naha Sansui Hotel Breakfast: Eat, soak, and recharge at once

The "Naha Sansui Hotel" where we stayed has a restaurant on the first floor, Hanagusuku. The breakfast is mainly Okinawan flavors, such as Okinawan noodles and side dishes, and even Ryukyu Awamori (Okinawan shochu) is generously provided - you can really feel the tipsy atmosphere of the southern country from the morning. There is also a sky bar and outdoor swimming pool on the top floor of the hotel. The decoration is in tropical resort style, and there is a whole transparent glass landscape wall. When the weather is good, you can see the sunrise, sunset and night view of Naha City in one go.

Another small highlight is the hotel's natural hot spring facilities, which use hot spring water pumped from 500 meters underground. A free hot spring ticket will be provided when checking in. The entrance is on the first floor, and the traditional Japanese bathhouse is right inside. There are also semi-open-air baths, hot and cold pools, and sauna areas upstairs. Although the facilities are not exaggerated, they are clean and complete. Taking a hot spring bath in the morning and having a local breakfast is a good way to start the trip.

10:00-16:00 Shopping in Kokusai-dori Shopping District: Good shopping, good food, and air conditioning

While the hotel was tidying up the room, we decided to take Little Hamburger to the busiest shopping spot in downtown Naha - Kokusai-dori. It was about a 12-minute drive from the hotel. We used the taxi app to take a taxi, which was convenient and inexpensive. Of course, you can also take the bus, walk to the nearby bus stop, take the bus to Kokusai-dori, and then walk a short distance to arrive. The transportation is quite affordable.

Kokusai-dori is one of the attractions that you can't miss when you travel to Okinawa. It is about 1.6 kilometers long. In addition to various shops, drugstores, desserts and souvenir shops on both sides, there are many small shopping streets in the alleys that are worth visiting, such as "Heiwa-dori", "Market Central-dori" and "First Makishi Public Market". Not only is it good to buy and eat here, it is also full of Okinawa's local characteristics, from traditional crafts to super friendly local snacks. You won't get bored even if you walk for an afternoon. It is recommended to wear a pair of comfortable walking shoes, and just walk and eat slowly!

How to expand your trip to Naminoue Shrine! Time recommendations for Senaga Island and the aquarium

Want to play more? This is the best way to enter DMM Aquarium

If you have time to go out in the morning, you can consider arranging a visit to DMM Kariyushi Aquarium first. The exhibition area in the aquarium combines aquarium displays with light, shadow and sound effects. There are many interactive walls and immersive projections. Children will find it novel and adults can take photos with satisfaction. The visit time is about 1 to 1.5 hours. If you have lunch at the nearby shopping mall, you can naturally connect to the trip to Naminoue Palace. It takes about 20 minutes to drive from the aquarium to downtown Naha. It is convenient to drive or take a taxi. If you stay in a hotel in the city, you can also go back to take a nap at noon before going out, which is a more comfortable pace.

Or you can go to Senaga Island in the morning and watch the planes while taking a hot spring bath.

Senagajima is also a highly recommended extension attraction, especially suitable for visiting from morning to noon. In addition to being able to watch the planes take off and land, take photos and check in, there are also many exotic coffee shops and complex stores where you can eat and shop. If time permits, you can also experience the local "Ryujin no Yu" hot spring facilities. It is really healing to soak in the hot spring while watching the sea view. It takes about 20 minutes to drive from Senagajima to downtown Naha. The trip is just right for the afternoon visit to Naminoue Shrine, which is a "relax first, then empty" travel method.
