The beautiful red leaves of Sagano Arashiyama in Kyoto attract countless tourists. Both locals and foreign tourists regard this place as a must-visit place. Famous attractions such as the Arashiyama Train, Bamboo Forest, Nonomiya Shrine, and Togetsukyo Bridge have become familiar sightseeing hotspots for many people. However, these scenic spots are mostly concentrated south of the Sagano Scenic Railway route and have not yet fully displayed the full panorama of Arashiyama. If you visit Sagano again, it is recommended to explore the area north of the tourist railway route. Hidden gardens like Hoko-in, with rich layers of red leaves, will bring a deeper sense of the natural beauty of Arashiyama.
Hokōin Transportation Guide: The best route for a trip to Arashiyama’s autumn leaves
Wendy and Anya visited Arashiyama for the first time. They took a group tour and took the Arashiyama Train to explore along the classic routes of the bamboo forest, Nonomiya Shrine, Arashiyama Street and Togetsukyo Bridge. However, after many subsequent visits, I began to design my own routes and found that there were new surprises every time.
This time, I took the city bus No. 91 or 28 from Kyoto Station early in the morning to Arashiyama Daikakuji Temple, then took the bus back and got off at the "Sagagagado-mae" bus stop to start an in-depth exploration trip. Along the way, we visited Qingliangji Temple, Hokung-in Temple, Jiouji Temple, Erzunin Temple and Jōjikoji Temple, and finally arrived at the Arashiyama train station, where we connected our earliest memories and gained a new understanding and experience of Arashiyama.
Autumn is the fall season in Sagano. From Seiryoji Temple to Hoko-in Temple, there are many temples and red leaf attractions. Although it attracts a large number of local Japanese tourists, the narrow alleys effectively isolate large tour buses, allowing the place to maintain a quiet atmosphere. . Self-guided travelers can easily stroll and enjoy this beautiful scenery. Bring your camera and explore this hidden Saga Wilderness with us!
▲ The maple leaf protruding from the wall is really eye-catching.
▲ Even if it is not in the original planned itinerary, immediately pay out and buy tickets to enter the park!
▲ There are many tourists in the small garden.
▲ There are many people in the courtyard. It is a bit difficult to take pictures of the maple scene with no one at all.
But it is definitely a place suitable for pure appreciation. Perhaps you should put down your camera at this time. ^^
▲ What a familiar figure!
▲ From this angle, the maple scene with no one can definitely be photographed. ^^
▲ The presiding monk of the Baojingyuan Temple, the Zen Master Xiaoan, enshrined his friend Xiaonan Gong Nanmu Zhengxing here at that time. Those who are interested can learn more about the historical allusions during this period.
Conclusion
Baokangyuan is a small garden with a square layout. It is surrounded by walls to isolate it from the outside roads and noise, but it cannot block the beautiful scenery of the rich and dense maple trees inside. Even though it is not as famous as other popular attractions, tourists passing here are often attracted to it unconsciously. This garden was not originally included in our itinerary, but it left a deep impression on us and became a surprising discovery during this maple viewing trip. I highly recommend it to everyone.
