How to choose the ideal scenic spot during your second year of Keihan maple viewing trip? Basically, I took into consideration the beautiful sights and special attractions that I missed in my first year, and Daigoji Temple falls squarely into the latter category. I originally thought it was just a famous place for cherry blossom viewing, but I unexpectedly discovered that the beauty of its red leaves at night is really stunning. In addition, there are very few tourists, making it a perfect place for viewing maple trees. Although my friends have been urging me not to expose this attraction too early, many travel bloggers have actually reported on Daigoji Temple. Due to the reservation and payment requirements, the number of people who actually visit is not very large.

2022 Autumn evening visit, reservation-free admission

This year is different from the past, no appointment is required for open autumn night visits, only a reminder to arrive early, and the visit time is 2022/11/18 (Friday) ~ 2022/12/4 (Sunday), 6:8 p.m. to 50:8 p.m. 10 points to buy tickets to enter the venue, and the acceptance end time is 1,000:XNUMX p.m., the ticket fee is XNUMX yen (tickets are required for junior high school students and above), and the video screen shot at that time is supplemented (I point), compared with the crowds of Yongguantang, the quiet and unique maple scene of Daigo Temple is worth a visit.

How to get to Daigo Temple in Kyoto by public transportation?

During the cherry blossom and maple viewing seasons, Kyoto Station has become a core place for travelers to stay. Here are two ways to get to Daigoji Temple in Kyoto:

  1. From Kyoto Station: Take the JR Kosai Line (local train) to Yamashina Station, then transfer to the Tozai Subway Line and finally get off at Daigo Station. This was the transportation route I chose when I went cherry blossom viewing with friends and family in April 2012. After exiting the station, you can choose to walk to Daigoji Temple and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.
  2. The most convenient way to use the subway is to take the subway Karasuma Line from Kyoto Station to Karasuma-Oike Station, then transfer to the Tozai Subway Line and finally arrive at Daigo Station. This route uses subway transportation entirely, which is very convenient and suitable for beginners who want to reach Daigoji Temple quickly.

Basic introduction to Daigoji Temple in Kyoto

Daigo Temple was built in the 874th year of Zhenguan (907) in the Tang Dynasty. When the holy master Rigen went up Mount Daigo, he encountered the spiritual guidance of the mountain god Yokoo Myojin, and received the spiritual spring "Daigo water". In order to worship Junhao Guanyin and Ruyilun Guanyin, he built a small temple, which also became the predecessor of Daigoji Temple. As time went by, due to the belief of the three Japanese emperors Daigo, Suzaku and Murakami in Buddhism, in accordance with the wishes of Emperor Daigo, Yakushido was built in the seventh year of Enki (XNUMX), and the temple building of Kamidaigo was gradually completed. .

Next, plans were made to build a temple in Shimodaigo. The Sakyamuni Hall was built in the fourth year of Yanchang (926), and the five-story pagoda was subsequently completed in the fifth year of Tianli (951), which marked the basic completion of Xia Daigo's temple construction. Since then, Daigoji Temple has occupied an important position in the history of Buddhism as the central temple of the Ono School of Shingon Buddhism.

Sharing my experience of admiring the night maples at Daigoji Temple in Kyoto

The maple forest areas along the way will be carefully lit up with lights to create various light and shadow changes, making the nighttime viewing experience more charming. Night maple viewing adopts a reservation and payment system. Visitors need to apply on the official website and get approval before paying. Compared with other famous places, the number of maple viewing crowds here is relatively small, which is very suitable for tourists who like quiet scenery. Here, chatting or taking photos with friends seems to add a leisurely mood to the tour, without having to worry about crowding affecting your enjoyment.

A friend who is a photography enthusiast and I especially love taking pictures. We were able to take pictures of the beautiful night maples reflected on Daigoji Lake without crowds. We couldn't help but thank our friends who helped make reservations. This time it was really rewarding. Satisfactory.
